How Does Tattoo Removal Work?
Laser Tattoo Removal Simplified: The Tattoo Removal Process
If you have a tattoo you no longer want on your body, you may think you’re stuck with it. Don’t be deceived by other removal methods that market themselves as effective but leave individuals with scars, loss of pigmentation, or nothing more than a slightly lighter-coloured tattoo.
TATTOO REMOVAL IS POSSIBLE
With experienced talent and cutting-edge lasers you can achieve total tattoo reduction on nearly every tattoo colour and size. Want to know more? Here are the most frequently asked questions about tattoo removal.
DOES TATTOO REMOVAL ACTUALLY WORK?
Those who have tried over-the-counter removal creams or other non-laser methods may be skeptical about whether tattoo removal actually works or not. There are two methods of tattoo removal: pushing the ink up and through the skin’s surface, which is the method used by creams as well as salt and saline methods, and breaking up the ink into tiny particles without breaking the skin so the body can safely absorb the ink. The first method is rarely very effective and cannot fully remove a tattoo. However, with the right lasers in the hands of experienced technicians, the second method has proven very effective in removing both old and newer tattoos.
CAN YOU COMPLETELY REMOVE A TATTOO?
Yes, it is possible to completely remove a tattoo if the right laser or combination of lasers is used. We use lasers to break up different colors of ink into tiny particles that are then safely passed out of your body through the lymphatic system. This has proven to be a safe and effective way to remove tattoos, and we find that we can completely remove the majority of tattoos our clients come in with. While other methods can help lighten tattoos and make them easier to cover up with new tattoos, lasers are the only method that can completely remove a tattoo.
WHY ARE TATTOOS SO DIFFICULT TO REMOVE?
Tattoos are difficult to remove because of the immense variation in how they are applied as well as each individual’s unique skin tone and texture. For a tattoo to be permanent, ink needs to be inserted deep into the dermis and the ink particles need to be large enough that they can’t naturally be flushed from the body’s system. This means that an innovative technology such as lasers must be used to break up these particles before they can safely be absorbed. Further complicating the matter, the colors of ink used respond differently to various wavelengths of lasers.
HOW MANY SESSIONS DOES IT TAKE TO REMOVE A TATTOO?
It depends on the size, colour, age, and location of your tattoo. Typically, six to twelve treatments spaced six to eight weeks apart is the average number of sessions required to fully remove a tattoo. When you have your initial consultation we will evaluate your tattoo for colour, age, ink depth, and other considerations and give you an estimate of how many sessions we believe it will take for full removal. We can then offer a package based on the appraisal.
ARE OLDER TATTOOS HARDER TO REMOVE?
Actually, it’s the opposite. The older the tattoo, the more it has faded, and the more ink has already been absorbed by the body. The body has also had more time to attack the foreign particles so those particles have become weak over time. This means that it could only take a few sessions to remove a tattoo that’s ten years old, while it would take twice as many to remove the same tattoo if it was only a year old.
CAN YOU REMOVE A TATTOO RIGHT AFTER YOU GET IT?
Regrets happen, and we often see clients come in looking to remove a tattoo they just got done. We always tell people that a tattoo cannot be removed with a laser until it has completely healed, which usually takes six to eight weeks. During this time, it’s vital to take care of your tattoo so that it heals smoothly and can be more easily targeted with our lasers. New tattoos are more difficult to remove than older ones as the ink has not had any time to fade, and full removal may take more sessions. In addition, if a tattoo does not heal properly, it could cause scarring and this makes the process of tattoo removal even more complicated.
CAN A SMALL TATTOO BE REMOVED IN ONE SESSION?
There are many factors involved in the number of treatments needed to remove a tattoo, including depth of ink, colours used, tattoo age, and tattoo size. It’s rare for any tattoo to be successfully removed with just one treatment, even if it is small.
WHAT COLOUR OF TATTOO IS THE HARDEST TO REMOVE?
Yellow, pink, white, and certain shades of green and blue are usually the hardest colors to remove. However, with the right type of laser set at the correct wavelength, we’ve found there is usually no color we can’t remove in a handful of sessions.
WHAT KIND OF TATTOOS ARE EASIEST TO REMOVE?
There is a lot of variety here, but we usually find the easiest tattoos to remove are primarily black, at least ten years old, and relatively small. In addition, tattoos on upper parts of the body such as the upper arms, chest, and shoulders are typically easier to remove than those on the legs, hands, or wrists.
ARE SMALL TATTOOS EASIER TO REMOVE?
Small tattoos are generally easier to remove due simply to the less amount of skin they cover. However, even small tattoos can be tricky if they have resistant colors, are located on certain parts of the body, or if you have a certain skin tone or type.
ARE LARGE TATTOOS MORE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE?
The larger the tattoo, generally the more sessions it takes to remove. Just like small tattoos, though, a number of other factors play into the number of treatments needed to fully remove every size of tattoo.
HOW LONG AFTER A TATTOO REMOVAL TREATMENT WILL I SEE RESULTS?
After each laser tattoo removal treatment session, it will be difficult to immediately see results because the skin on and around your tattoo will likely be red and swollen and will then may develop blisters as it heals. You may also see hypo- or hyperpigmentation in the tattoo area. All of this is normal and fades with time. Once this has healed, you should see a lighter tattoo after your first treatment, and it should get lighter with each subsequent treatment until the tattoo is completely gone.
Educating yourself about the laser tattoo removal process and what you can expect for your unique removal situation will help you prepare for treatment and the subsequent results. No matter what type of tattoo you have, our team can develop a laser treatment plan that will almost always provide full removal.
